Definition

Under general supervision, operates and maintains foundation exploration and testing equipment; directs one drill rig crew; and does other related work.

Typical Tasks

Performs and directs the work involved in foundation explorations, including the operation of rotary drilling, jetting, sampling, testing, and diamond drilling equipment; drives trucks containing drilling equipment; sets up and operates drilling equipment; maintains and repairs drilling equipment and special foundation exploration and testing tools; directs the work of one drill rig crew and trains employees in drilling and testing operations; makes oral and written reports; conducts safety meetings in the field; keeps drilling and maintenance records.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a valid and unrestricted Class A driver license. and Either I Two years of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Foundation Driller.

Or II

 

Four years of experience in the repair, operation, and maintenance of drilling machinery and accessory power equipment, at least six months of which must have been in geological exploration work using soil sampling and diamond drilling equipment.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Foundation exploration methods; tools and equipment used in geological foundation drilling and testing work, including soil sampling or diamond drilling; Cal/OSHA safety regulations and practices pertaining to the operation of drilling equipment.

 

Ability to: Read construction plans and specifications and lay out and direct foundation investigation work; judge foundation material; drive trucks; operate drilling equipment in difficult locations; keep drilling and maintenance records; lay out and direct the work of others; climb steep slopes and work on difficult terrain; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; conduct safety meetings; communicate effectively.

Special Personal Characteristics

Willingness to travel in performing drilling work for short periods throughout the State; physical ability sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.

Drug Testing Requirement

Applicants for positions in this class are required to pass a drug screening test. Testing of current employees who are applicants in an examination or who are transferring is permitted only if the person does not have a current appointment to a class for which drug testing is a requirement.
