Military Travel

Travel on a working day (unpaid)

If you need to use travel time, and you're traveling on a working day (other than when a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday is a working day) you can use any leave credits except sick leave to receive pay for the travel time.

Travel and the type of military leave

  • Travel time isn't included unless your orders clearly state travel time is part of your active duty.
  • Travel time isn't considered when determining the type of military leave of absence (short, long, etc).  For example, if an employee's active duty lasts 6 months (short term), and the employee is allowed two days of travel, the two days of travel don't make it long-term.

Allowed travel time

You're allowed to use the day prior to your active duty date for travel unless your orders indicate otherwise. If you travel on a working day, you can use any leave credits except sick leave to receive pay for the travel time.
If you do use travel time, the State must consider the travel time when computing whether you qualify for your salary.

Examples

Your orders provide only one day for travel.

  • Your active duty date is Thursday, September 14.
  • The day allowed for travel is Wednesday, September 13.
  • Your military leave begins effective Tuesday, September 12.

Your orders provide for more than one day of travel.

  • Your active duty date is Thursday, September 14.
  • You're allowed five day for travel: Sunday, September 9 through Wednesday, September 13.
  • Your military leave begins effective Saturday, September 8.

Your orders don't require travel time.

  • Your active duty date is Thursday, September 14.
  • Your last day at work is Wednesday, September 13.
  • Your military lay begins effective Wednesday, September 13.

Your orders don't require travel time because you work the same day you report for active duty.

  • Your active duty date is Thursday, September 14.
  • Your last day at work is Thursday, September 14.
  • Your military lay begins effective Thursday, September 14.
