Reasonable Accommodation
Reasonable Accommodation (RA) is any modification or adjustment to a job, the work environment, or in the way things are customarily done, that enables a qualified person with a disability to have equal employment opportunity. RA ensures equal opportunity in the job application, examination, and hiring processes that will enable a qualified applicant or employee with a disability to participate in those processes and perform the essential functions of the job. There are many types of accommodations. Each RA request is unique and must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
RA Needs
Persons with disabilities who need RA for a state civil service examination through the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) can contact CalHR’s Examinations Unit at (866) 844-8671, or via the California Relay Service for the Deaf or Hard of Hearing at (800) 735-2929 from TTY Phones, or at (800) 735-2922 from voice phones.
Persons with disabilities who need RA for an examination conducted by another state department or need RA to perform the essential functions of a state job should contact the RA Coordinator or the Equal Employment Opportunity Officer for the applicable department. Each department is required by federal and state laws to engage in the RA interactive process when a job applicant or employee with a disability identifies a need for an accommodation to participate in a selection process, perform the essential functions of a job, complete required training, or benefit from employer-sponsored events.
