Definition

Under general direction, performs the more difficult tasks involved in the inspecting and testing of structural and reinforcing steel and related structural materials during fabrication, erection, or maintenance of existing structures; may lead lower-level steel inspector staff; and does other related work.

Typical Tasks

During fabrication, erection, or maintenance, performs the more difficult work and may lead technical assistants in inspecting, testing, and determining the quality of both welded, bolted, and riveted steel structures and of components and structures fabricated of other related structural materials. As part of the source inspection program, conducts prefabrication meetings with fabricators to review all aspects of the project related to fabrication of structural steel items; reviews and makes recommendations regarding shop plans, weld procedures, welder qualifications, and other items in a quality control plan; during fabrication, acts as lead on more complex projects; may lead assistant inspectors on less difficult projects; checks materials for compliance with plans and specifications; reviews inspection reports in a lead capacity and makes recommendations as to acceptance or rejection of materials in a timely manner; recommends changes in material specifications in line with current practice; makes special studies and recommends controls for inspecting new types and procedures of fabrication; keeps accurate records and issues daily reports regarding progress of the project; coordinates activities with resident engineer or structure representative to insure timely project delivery of items; and schedules and performs source inspections related to a variety of structural products and other items.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a current Certified Welding Inspector Certification per the most recent American Welding Society QC-1 document. and Either I Two years in the California state service performing the duties of an Assistant Steel Inspector.

Experience: Six years of experience in the fabrication or erection of structural steel, including at least two years' fabrication or erection inspection and physical testing of structural materials. The equivalent of an Associate's Degree in Welding Technology, Nondestructive Testing, or Metallurgy may be substituted for two years of the required experience.) and

 

Education: Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Fabrication and erection of structural steel and manufacture of related materials; inspection and testing methods and equipment used for structural steel and related structural products; current American Society for Testing Materials, American Welding Society, and American Association of State Transportation Highway Officials standards and tests referring to metal and related structural materials; California Department of Transportation's standard specifications.

 

Ability to: Make inspections and conduct and/or witness tests on various metals and related structural materials; evaluate and apply new methods and equipment for testing structural materials; establish and maintain cooperative relations with the fabricating industry suppliers, resident engineer for the project, and contractors; prepare comprehensive reports; communicate at a level required for successful job performance; make mathematical calculations related to testing and acceptance of materials; analyze situations and adopt an effective course of action; work alone; work at considerable heights above the ground or water; travel to inspection locations both in State and out of State on reasonable notice for extended periods of time.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

Knowledge and experience in nondestructive testing.
