DEIA Virtual Backgrounds

Purpose: DEIA virtual backgrounds raise awareness about underrepresented or marginalized cultures and communities. They are a tool for promoting equity and inclusion. CalHR will add a limited number of virtual backgrounds annually, so check this page and the archives. Jewish Am​erican Heritage Monthis in May. It's an opportunity for us to learn about their stories, successes, and struggles. The month also reminds us to appreciate and respect different cultures. It also shows the need to stand against hate. It's about learning more about their heritage and uniting as a community. Celebrating Jewish American Heritage Month shows the value of U.S. diversity. We appreciate how they've shaped America. 

 

May is also Mental Health Awareness Month. It highlights the value of mental health. It urges open talks about mental health to reduce shame and build community. The month aims to combat stigma through kindness and understanding. It encourages everyone to learn about mental health to support themselves and others. It promotes seeking help when necessary, reminding us that there's no shame in getting support. This month reminds us to focus on mental health all year. We aim for a world where talking about and caring for mental health is normal. 

 

The theme forOlder Americans Awareness Month is "Powered by Connection." It stresses the need to build strong relationships and networks for older adults. It highlights that family, friends, and the community can greatly improve seniors' well-being. They can also improve their quality of life. This theme encourages us to reach out, engage, and support the older members of our communities. It recognizes that social bonds are vital for everyone. This is especially true as we age. The goal is to foster an inclusive and supportive culture. "Powered by Connection" aims to show that we can ensure that older adults feel valued, respected, and part of society. It's a reminder: through connection, we empower older Americans. It enriches their lives and the community.  

 

The US celebrates Asian American Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month  in May. This year's theme is Advancing Leaders Through Innovation". This Month highlights the AAPI leaders' contributions. They have helped America prosper. Their advancement in tech has helped the world change socially and politically. This month is a chance to honor the lively AAPI communities! By recognizing the history and ongoing contributions of AAPIs, we can create a more fair and inclusive society.

DEIA Virtual Background Submission Guidelines​

If your California state agency or department has DEI-related virtual backgrounds (VBs) to share statewide, follow these submission guidelines for consideration.

  1. Ensure the images and language contained within the VB are culturally appropriate
    • ​Best practice: Seek feedback from people who have lived experience related to the DEIA VB
    • Better practice: Involve people with lived experience in the creation of DEIA VB
  2. For accessibility:
    • Select text and background colors that contrast
    • Use sans serif fonts like Arial or Calibri at least 16 px or larger
    • Include alt text to describe the VB 
  3. To ensure the VB is searchable, include the required key words below and add additional, relevant key words of your choosing​
    • ​​Required key words:  DEIA, diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility
4. Create a brief narrative describing the significance of the VB
5. For attribution, include state agency/department/office logo or other branding element
6. Email VB submission to DEIToolkit@calhr.ca.gov in the email body be sure to include:
  • Alt text
  • Searchable key words
  • Brief narrative
