Definition

Under general direction, to review and determine the medical aspects of applicants seeking vocational rehabilitation services; and to do other work as required.

Typical Tasks

In the Vocational Rehabilitation Program: reviews case histories and evaluates and interprets medical reports of applicants for vocational rehabilitation services; determines the need for, nature, and extent of further diagnostic studies; confers with other medical doctors regarding their findings; may refer applicants to designated specialists for additional examinations; outlines corrective measures including medical, psychiatric, and surgical treatment; reviews plans for rehabilitation with the rehabilitation counselor and makes recommendations on their feasibility and adequacy from the standpoint of the medical problems involved and of the total rehabilitation prospects of the applicant; assists in developing local panels of examining physicians and specialists; interprets the Department of Rehabilitation programs to local physicians and medical groups; assists with in-service training of local staff; may recommend policy or operational changes; and does other work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of the legal requirements for the practice of medicine in California as determined by the California Board of Medical Quality Assurance or the California Board of Osteopathic Examiners. (Applicants who are in the process of securing approval by the Board of Medical Quality Assurance or the Board of Osteopathic Examiners will be admitted to the examination, but the Board to which application is made must determine that all legal requirements have been met before candidates will be eligible for appointment.) and One year of experience in the practice of medicine exclusive of internship.

Knowledges and Abilities

Knowledge of: Principles and practices of general medicine; diagnostic methods and the principles of differential diagnosis; physical requirements of industrial jobs and the environmental conditions in various industries; laws and policies affecting the medical aspects of the program of the Department of Rehabilitation.

 

Ability to: Evaluate medical problems in relation to vocational requirements; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; interpret the medical aspects of the Department's work to interested groups.
