Definition

Under close supervision, to learn and perform a wide variety of general operations and maintenance duties; to perform unskilled tasks and helper work; and to do other related work in preparation for promotion into an apprentice class in either electrical maintenance and mechanical maintenance, civil maintenance, or plant operations.

Job Characteristics

This class is designed as a preapprenticeship class to qualify incumbents as Hydroelectric Plant Operator Apprentice, Hydroelectric Plant Electrician Apprentice, or Hydroelectric Plant Mechanic Apprentice or Civil Maintenance Apprentice. Employees in this class perform necessary and productive work under supervision while receiving comprehensive training in general operations and maintenance work. Incumbents are expected to maintain satisfactory progress in learning through on-the-job training and formal academic training to attain a level which would qualify for the apprenticeship class examinations. Failure to become qualified for appointment to one of the apprenticeship classes within a 24-month period will be considered evidence of unsatisfactory progress and cause for termination.

Typical Tasks

Assists journeyworkers and apprentices in performing the less skilled and technical work; maintains cleanliness in the work area; obtains and puts away hand tools, and learns their use; sets up staging and other devices for doing work; learns methods, equipment and procedures used in operations and maintenance.

 

In Plant Electrical Maintenance: learns methods through on-the-job training, equipment and procedures used in electrical maintenance of pumping and generating plants, assists electrical journeyworkers and apprentices in performing the less skilled and technical work associated with electrical maintenance; operates motor vehicles; receives training and learns subjects necessary to prepare for the Hydroelectric Plant Electrician Apprentice class.

 

In Plant Mechanical Maintenance: learns methods through on-the-job training, equipment and procedures used in mechanical maintenance of pumping and generating plants; assists mechanic journeyworkers and apprentices in performing the less skilled and technical work associated with mechanical maintenance; operates motor vehicles; receives training and learns subjects necessary to prepare for the Hydroelectric Plant Mechanic Apprentice class.

 

In Civil Maintenance: learns methods through on-the-job training, equipment and procedures used in maintenance of dams, levees, channels, reservoirs and associated physical structures; assists civil maintenance journeyworkers and apprentices in performing the less skilled and technical work associated with maintenance and repair of flood control or water project facilities (includes the ability to lift and carry weights, bend, stoop, and stretch); operates motor vehicles; receives training and learns subjects necessary to prepare for the Civil Maintenance Apprentice class.

 

In Plant Operations: learns methods through on-the-job training, equipment and procedures used in operation and control of pumping and generating plants and water conveyance facilities; assists operator journeyworkers and apprentices in performing the less skilled and technical work associated with plant operations; operates motor vehicles; receives training and learns subjects necessary for the Hydroelectric Plant Operator Apprentice class.

Minimum Qualifications

Successful completion of a formal maintenance and operation work experience training program such as under the Manpower Development and Training Act, the Job Corps, the Neighborhood Youth Corps, the Work Incentive Program (WIN), the California Conservation Corps, the Concentrated Employment Program (CEP), or experience gained through similar programs administered by State agencies.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Basic tools and equipment used in simple maintenance repair work; safe work practices.

 

Ability to: Read and write English and perform basic arithmetic and to learn and progress in knowledge and skills to enable incumbent to qualify for the Hydroelectric Plant Electrical, Mechanical, Operator Apprentice classes, or Civil Maintenance Apprentice class.

Special Personal Characteristics

Good physical condition; willingness to adapt to shift work; willingness and ability to accept increasing responsibility; willingness and ability to demonstrate self-improvement in the form of courses to improve communication and computation skills, and other subjects necessary to prepare for Apprenticeship Training.
