Under direct supervision of a registered nurse, to assist in the administering of nursing care to clients in a State developmental center or hospital; and to do other related work.
The class of Pre-Registered Nurse is an entrance classification in the registered nursing series. Incumbents must have an approved application for examination on file with the California Board of Registered Nurses, and must possess a valid interim permit issued by that Board. All positions in this class are established for a period not to exceed six months and all appointments are made on a temporary basis. Incumbents will be required to become registered with the California Board of Registered Nurses within this six-month period of time.
Assists in the administering of general nursing care to physically ill or mentally ill or developmentally disabled patients; assists in the administering of non-narcotic medications as prescribed by physicians; assists physicians in clinical examinations and in the administering of inoculations, vaccinations, and treatments; observes patients' progress and reports unusual occurrences to medical officers; prepares clinical and bedside charts; assists in preparing and serving meals and special diets; assists in keeping current inventories of hospital supplies.
Education: Equivalent to graduation from a school of nursing approved by the California Board of Registered Nurses and eligibility to receive a valid interim permit issued by that Board.
Knowledge of: Technical skills and specific knowledge based on the principles of scientific medicine, such as are acquired by means of a prescribed course in an approved school of nursing.
Ability to: Perform assigned nursing duties.
Willingness to work in a State institution, alertness, patience, tact, keenness of observation, and emotional stability.
Applicants for positions in this class are required to pass a drug screening test. Testing of current employees who are applicants in an examination or who are transferring is permitted only if the person does not have a current appointment to a class for which drug testing is a requirement.
