Definition

Under direction, to work with and lead a group of janitors engaged in keeping a satellite wagering facility clean and orderly; and to do other related work.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Satellite Wagering Facility Lead Janitors are distinguished from the class of Janitor Supervisor I by performing duties at a facility which is required, per Business and Professions Code 19596.14, to enter into a labor agreement with the labor organization which has represented the same class at the nearest horse racing meeting.

 

Employees in this class normally work under direction of the Satellite Facility Supervisor or Assistant Satellite Facility Supervisor and are responsible for a small janitorial staff; employees in this class perform janitorial tasks as part of their assignment.

Typical Tasks

Leads, directs, and gives instruction/training to a group of janitors engaged in sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, spotting, and waxing floors; vacuuming rugs and carpets; cleaning, dusting, and polishing furniture, tables and woodwork; emptying and cleaning waste receptacles; spotting walls; cleaning floors, stairways, hallways, rest rooms, offices and lobbies; cleaning ceilings, walls, window shades, light fixtures and blinds; moving and arranging furniture and equipment; polishing nickel and brass work on door panels, hand railings, elevators, and door knobs and plates; turning out lights and locking doors and windows; refilling lavatory supply dispenser; replacing light globes and tubes; operating scrubbers, buffers, waxers, and other equipment and machinery; as required, performs and assists with the above tasks; as assigned, leads the work of a small specialist crew; receives, inspects stores and inventories supplies; keeps records and prepares simple reports. Identifies janitorial or general maintenance needs of the facility throughout the day and reports them to proper personnel; may provide direction and information to patrons, and makes work assignments.

Minimum Qualifications

Either I

 

One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Satellite Wagering Facility Janitor.

Or II

 

Experience: Two years of experience in janitorial work, one year of which must have been in a lead capacity over other employees and with responsibility for the janitorial work in a facility involving public contact; and

 

Education: Equivalent to completion of the eighth grade. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Methods, materials, chemicals, disinfectants, and equipment used in cleaning office and public buildings; sanitation and safety measures in the operating, cleaning and care of equipment and work areas; use of purchase orders for janitorial supplies and equipment.

 

Ability to: Plan, organize, and direct the work of others; give on- the-job instruction in janitorial practices; keep inventories and make requisitions; analyze situations and take effective course of action; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during the course of the work; interact with the public in a courteous and professional manner.
