Definition
Under direction, to make negatives with an offset process camera; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Does camera and darkroom work including examining copy to determine its photographic value; calculates reductions and enlargements; sets up and adjusts the camera to make photographs such as halftones, duotones, and line work; develops and fixes exposed photographic film in a processor; mixes various counter-etches, etches, developers, intensifiers, and reducers; makes layouts, plates and offpress proofing systems, trains nonjourney level personnel.
Minimum Qualifications
Either I
One year as a journey level offset process camera operator equivalent in experience to a Printing Trades Specialist III (Process Camera) in California state service.
Or II
Two years of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Lithographic Negative Assembler.
Or III
Three years of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Lithographic Pre-Press Assistant.
Or IV
Three years of experience performing the duties of a Lithographic Negative Assembler.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Operation of an offset process camera and the materials, methods, and equipment used in a photographic darkroom; materials, formulae, equipment, and processes used in making offset plates; book page layouts.
Skill in: Operation of an offset process camera and of the materials, methods, and equipment used in a photographic darkroom including a film processor; making offset plates and in mixing various counter-etches, etches, developers, intensifiers, and reducers.
Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; make minor adjustments to an offset process camera and processor; instruct nonjourney level personnel.
Additional Desirable Qualification
Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
