Definition
Under direction to prepare layouts and flats ready for plate making; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Prepares imposition layouts for book work and assembles component parts of general commercial work into final flats; makes mechanical spreads or chokes; spots or opaques negatives and positives; scribes negatives; lays tint screens at proper angles; makes contacts from negative to positive or positive to negative; strips multi-color jobs in register; prepares off press proofs; operates vacuum frames, and related film processing equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
Either I
Three years of experience working in a production department at the Office of State Printing. and
Completion of a minimum of 20 units of college level courses in the printing field with emphasis on lithography.
Or II
One year of experience as a journey level lithographic stripper, or equivalent, with negative and positive assembly experience as well as four-color process assembly.
Or III
Three years of experience as a Lithographic Pre-Press Assistant in California state service.
Or IV
Two years of experience in lithography. Education may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Methods and materials used in lithographic stripping; principles of offset printing. Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; understand the basic principles of color separations; practice good housekeeping; maintain equipment; understand job tickets.
Skill in: Stripping of final flats for plate making.
Additional Desirable Qualification
Education equivalent to completion of the twelve grade.
