Definition

Under direction, to do work of average difficulty in connection with the making of detailed inspections of the electrical systems in buildings under construction or alteration, and of their service connections, and to do other related work.

Typical Tasks

Makes inspections of electrical systems of building projects in process of construction or alteration, including inspection of low voltage control systems for mechanical equipment, and primary and secondary electrical distribution systems; makes progress reports as directed, and assists project construction supervisors in estimating percentage of electrical work accomplished in preparing monthly job progress payment estimates for payment to contractors; observes contractors tests of performance of electrical systems and equipment; makes notations in job field book as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Either I

 

One year of experience performing the duties of an Electrical Engineer in the California state service.

Or II

 

Four years of experience in the technical inspection of, or in the supervision as a contractor or electrical supervisor on the installation of electrical systems and equipment in buildings.

 

(College education with major work in electrical engineering may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of two years education being equivalent to one year experience.)

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Materials and processes entering into the construction of wood, steel, masonry, and concrete buildings; Electrical Safety Orders of the Division of Occupational Safety and Health; methods and procedures for testing the performance of electrical systems in buildings; materials and equipment required for the installation of electrical systems in buildings.

 

Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; detect poor workmanship and materials; understand building plans and specifications with particular emphasis on the electrical phase of the work; analyze situations, adopt an effective course of action, and work cooperatively with others; write clear and concise reports.

Special Personal Characteristics

Keenness of observation, tact, and willingness to travel.

Additional Desirable Qualification

Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
