Definition
Under general supervision, to assist mechanics in repairing and servicing automotive or heavy construction equipment; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Assists an automobile or heavy equipment mechanic with the overhauling, repairing, and adjusting of engines, transmissions, and ignition, electrical, fuel, and cooling systems, and installing cylinder heads and manifold gaskets; assists in the work of fitting and adjusting bearings and installing axles, relining and adjusting brakes, and aligning wheels; assists in preparing trucks, tractors, and automobiles for painting; services and greases mechanical equipment; threads bolts and taps nuts; identifies parts and fittings; keeps records and makes reports on the condition of equipment; in institutions, may assist in the supervision of the work of inmates; operates automotive equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a driver license valid for the operation of any two- axle vehicle except a bus or farm labor truck (motorcycle excluded) and one towed vehicle weighing less than 6,000 pounds gross. Applicants who do not possess this license will be admitted to the examination but must secure the license prior to appointment. and Either I One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Service Assistant (Automotive).

Completion within the last ten years of a recognized vocational course in automotive or heavy construction equipment technology, in either a high school, resident trade school, or junior college.
Or III
One year of experience, within the last ten years, assisting in the major repairs of automotive or heavy construction equipment.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Names of automotive and machine parts; automotive and heavy equipment; materials, machines and hand tools, equipment, and procedure used in their overhaul, repair, and adjustment.
Ability to: Communicate effectively as required for successful job performance; identify automotive and machine parts; perform the less skilled tasks involved in repairing and servicing automotive and heavy mechanical equipment.
Special Personal Characteristics
Aptitude and liking for mechanical work.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
Possession of a valid Class A or B driver license. Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Drug Testing Requirements
Applicants for positions in this class are required to pass a drug screening test. Testing of current employees who are applicants in an examination or who are transferring is permitted only if the person does not have a current appointment to a class for which drug testing is a requirement.
