Definition

Under general supervision, works independently and has lead responsibility over Museum Assistants I in areas such as providing orientation and training; handles special public relation problems that may arise; and does other related work.

Typical Tasks

Acts as floor supervisor for the Museum Assistants I; provides coverage for absences; assists in planning and organizing work schedules to meet varying workload needs; may organize and conduct training sessions for the Museum Assistants I; handles special public relations problems that may arise; provides background information about exhibits to the public; explains museum rules and regulations and maintains order in the exhibit area; reports any problem situations, damage and vandalism of interior building and exhibits; identifies and reports safety hazards to appropriate personnel; coordinates the closing of the Museum.

Minimum Qualifications

Either I

 

One year of experience in California state service performing the duties of the Museum Assistant I.

Or II

 

Two years' experience involving a major emphasis on oral presentations before groups. (Academic education above the twelfth grade may be substituted for the experience on the basis of one year of education being equivalent to one year of experience.)

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Museum rules and regulations.

 

Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; speak effectively before groups; deal tactfully with individuals and groups; assess situations accurately and take effective action; plan and organize work schedules; keep necessary records; present an effective training program.

Special Personal Characteristics

Neat appearance; good speaking voice; willingness to work on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays and on call, and to wear standard uniforms; ability to stand and work for long periods of time.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
