Reasonable Accommodation

  • If you have a disability and need special arrangements for an job examination or for a LEAP Readiness Evaluation through the California Department of Human Resources, contact the Examinations Unit at (866) 844-8671, or via the California Relay Service for the Deaf or Hard of Hearing at (800) 735-2929 from TTY Phones, or at (800) 735-2922 from voice phones.

  • If you need special arrangements for an examination conducted by another department, or if you need a reasonable accommodation to perform the essential functions of your state job, contact the Reasonable Accommodation Coordinator for the appropriate department.  If there is no RA Coordinator listed, contact the department EEO Officer.  Each department is required by federal and state laws to provide Reasonable Accommodation (RA) when a job applicant or employee with a disability needs assistance in order to complete a selection process, perform the essential functions of a job, complete required training, or benefit from an employer-sponsored events. The purpose of the accommodation is to allow the person with the disability to compete or perform on as equal a basis as possible with persons without disabilities. Employers are obligated to provide accommodation unless to do so would cause them undue hardship.

  • Reasonable Accommodation Coordinators or other state employee assisting with the Reasonable Accommodation process may find these resources helpful.   There are many types of accommodation and no one accommodation will be appropriate for all individuals with a disability.

Limited Examination and Appointment Program (LEAP)

The Limited Examination and Appointment Program (LEAP) is an alternate examination and appointment process designed to help persons with disabilities get jobs in the California civil service.  LEAP allows applicants to demonstrate qualifications for employment through an on-the-job examination instead of taking a traditional examination.  LEAP candidates must be certified by the Department of Rehabilitation and have their LEAP certificate information entered into CalHR's database by the Examination Services Program prior to admittance into the LEAP exam process.  Once a candidate is approved for LEAP exams, he/she may take LEAP exams as well as traditional civil service exams to obtain list eligibility.  List eligibility allows for the candidate to apply for any LEAP exams.  LEAP exams are available at The information below provides more detail about the program.
