Definition

Under direction, to plan, organize, and direct the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment in hydroelectric generating or pumping plants in an operations and maintenance field division; and to do other related work.

Typical Tasks

Plans, assigns, directs, and inspects the installation, repair, and maintenance of all electrical equipment in a hydroelectric generating or pumping plant including large motors, generators, transformers, circuit breakers, switches, and relays; makes diagrams and sketches and prepares estimates of job costs; recommends the selection of electrical materials; may inspect malfunctions of electrical systems and determine corrective action to be taken; insures that safe work practices are followed; keeps records and prepares reports.

Minimum Qualifications

Either I

 

Two years of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Hydroelectric Plant Electrician II.

Or II

 

Two years of professional engineering experience in the California state service in the operation and maintenance of hydroelectric generating or pumping facilities at the level of an Assistant Engineer.

Or III

 

Five years' experience as a journeyperson electrician performing electrical maintenance and repair work in a hydroelectric generating or pumping plant, two years of which shall have been in a leadperson capacity.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Principles, methods, materials, tools and equipment, and the application of electrical theory as used in maintenance, repair and replacement of electrical systems and equipment used at hydroelectric generating and pumping plants; National Electric Code and the Electrical Safety Orders of the Division of Occupational Safety and Health; principles of effective supervision and shop management; mathematics normally required of this trade; department's affirmative action program objectives; a manager's role in the affirmative action program and the processes available to meet affirmative action objectives.

 

Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; plan, direct, and inspect the work of others; prepare rough sketches and cost estimates; instruct and supervise subordinates; keep records and make reports; insure that effective safety practices are understood and observed; effectively contribute to the department's affirmative action objectives.

Additional Desirable Qualification

Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
