OCM Element 5: Training and Support

How does this benefit you and those impacted by the change?

Delivering targeted, change-specific training (e.g., workshops, ongoing coaching, job aids) focused on what employees need most to succeed in the new environment, addressing anticipated challenges, providing guidance, and encouraging stakeholders along the way equip you to:

  • Build employee competence and confidence as they gain the skills and knowledge to work in a new way;
  • Increase adoption and willingness by making the transition feel manageable;
  • Accelerate productivity;
  • Foster trust and commitment to the change;
  • Refine processes through ongoing support and feedback loops.

Simple practices for training and support:

  • Ask, don’t guess. Do a quick skills gap check by asking managers or leads:
    • What’s most challenging this week?
    • Is there friction?  And if so, where?
    • What’s the biggest hurdle for your team right now?
    • Where has the team had its biggest success?
  • Top three to thrive. Identify the top two-three skills or process changes people must master before anything else.
  • Train fast. Skip long sessions. Deliver short, focused demos (15–30 minutes) inside existing team meetings, showing exactly how to do the new thing with one-two clear examples.
  • Coach. Pair early adopters or confident users with those still learning. Keep it casual – quick huddles before or after work sessions.
  • Build the bench. Build a roster of early adopters and match them with new learners ahead of time for informal peer coaching opportunities.
