MSS Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What are your current job openings?
View our current county job postings at governmentjobs.com/career/mss. If you are looking for a career with the State of California, visit calcareers.ca.gov.
How do I apply for a county social services or child support services job opening?
Find the current job posting you want to apply for at governmentjobs.com/career/mss. Create a profile and complete your online application. Be sure to include your transcripts, licenses, and other additional documents you may need. Apply to the job posting(s) you’re interested in using the online application (your one application can be used for multiple jobs; you do not need to fill out multiple applications).
What is the hiring process?
Job postings are typically open for applications for a limited time. All applications are reviewed and candidates are notified of whether or not they have met the minimum qualifications. If you do not meet the minimum qualifications, you will have an opportunity to address the decision and provide additional information that may qualify you for the recruitment.
Qualified candidates must take an examination specific to the classification being recruited. All candidates who pass the examination are placed on an Eligible List for hiring and the hiring county will contact candidates for interviews. Candidates are eligible for up to one year.
What is the status of my application for…?
You can log onto your profile on governmentjobs.com to see the current status of any application you have submitted. If you are unable to see the status of your application, contact us via email or via telephone at 916-909-3701.
I did not pass the examination, now what?
You are eliminated from the hiring process. You may take the examination again after six months (service-wide multiple-choice exams, training and experience exams) or when a recruitment occurs again (structured interview exams, county specific exams, other exams) or you may file an appeal if your situation meets the criteria outlined in the appeals section of our page.
How can I appeal…?
If you feel your county is performing something improper, refer to your county’s policies to pursue any local remedies for the situation. If you have already exhausted these options, refer to the appeals section of our page to determine if this is something CalHR has jurisdiction over. If it is or if you are unsure, you can contact us via email to get started.
