Originally titled "Supervisory Skills Module 2: Managing Employee Issues". California State Supervisors are governed by numerous laws and rules. While supervisors are not expected to become experts in the laws surrounding EEO, labor relations, grievances, or workers compensation laws, they are responsible for effectively navigating this legal environment to safeguard employees’ rights and properly address employee issues.
Please note, 80 Hour Supervisory Series Mod I - III may be taken in any order. The 80 Hour Supervisory Series Mod IV must be the final course taken in the series.
When supervisors and managers fail to deal effectively with workplace problems, their employees are more likely to exhibit low job satisfaction, plummeting morale, poor performance, and overall loss of productivity. Eventually, one or more of the 'formal' processes is engaged, i.e. discrimination and harassment complaints, or grievances and adverse actions. Once formalized, resolution becomes more legalistic, expensive, and time-consuming, with potentially harsher consequences for employees.
When facing employee issues, the key decision is when to act and when to seek help. Effective supervisors develop a line of open communications with departmental human resources personnel and other specialists who are adept at bringing in these critical resources in managing employee issues. As a supervisor, you will be involved in each situation, there are no "hand offs".
