Definition
Under direction, to perform a variety of skilled carpentry, masonry, and other tasks in connection with the restoration of historic buildings and sites; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Performs a variety of skilled carpentry, masonry, and other tasks in connection with restoration, preservation, and stabilization of historic buildings and sites; checks on shoring and bracing for new foundations under old brick, adobe, and wood frame buildings; assists in plumbing existing buildings to original positions; does concrete work; makes adobe blocks; reproduces original finishes on adobe, brick, and wood frame buildings; hews logs; makes shakes; lays adobe and brick to match old work and matches original carpentry work; checks on details bearing on authenticity and does research as required; consults with other craftspersons and leads less skilled assistants; assists in maintaining project safety; keeps tools, materials, and equipment in good condition and keeps simple records.
Minimum Qualifications
Either I
Three years of varied experience performing the duties of a Restoration Worker in the California state service.
Or II
One year of varied experience as a journeyperson craftsperson engaged in restoration work, including experience in carpentry and masonry.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Methods, materials, tools, equipment, and terminology used in carpentry and masonry as applied to restoration work; Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety and building codes applicable to restoration projects. Ability to: Read, interpret, and work from plans, drawings, and specifications; prepare rough sketches of work and estimates of labor; recognize lumber types and grades; follow oral and written directions; keep records and make reports; instruct and lead less skilled assistants; read and write at a level appropriate to the classification.
Interest in and aptitude for restoration work.
