Definition
Under direction, to do operational photogrammetric work in the field or office in connection with obtaining photogrammetric products and acquiring data by photogrammetric procedures; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Performs interior, relative, and absolute orientation of stereoscopic instruments of the direct projection type or universal type, using vertical or twin low-oblique aerial photography including orientation under difficult conditions exemplified by warped models, extensive water areas or obscure control conditions; using stereoscopic instruments, compiles planimetric and topographic map detail of difficult areas as exemplified by extremely congested culture, precipitous terrain, heavy vegetative cover, and hidden areas, wherein extensive interpretation of aerial photographs is required; using stereoscopic instruments coupled with electronic equipment, determines the configuration of terrain surface in digital form; using precision comparator instruments determines photographic coordinate positions of discrete image points and prepares the data for electronic machine computation; designs aerial photographic projects and plans supplemental photographic control; lays out base sheets for map manuscript preparation; assists in the preparation of plans, specifications, and estimates for aerial survey contracts; in the field, performs difficult photo-identification of supplemental control points; in the field, assists in establishing horizontal and vertical values of control points using applicable survey procedures dependent upon terrain conditions and accuracy requirements; assists in training personnel in fundamentals of stereoscopic instrument operation.
Minimum Qualifications
Either I
Experience: One year of photogrammetric experience which shall have included as a regular part of the duties, operation of precision stereoscopic instruments of the direct-projection type. and
Education: Equivalent to graduation from either:
1. A course in civil engineering with a B.S. degree; or 2. A course leading to a B.S. degree and with a major in photogrammetry.
Or II
Experience: Five years of nonprofessional technical experience in support of civil engineering, at least two years of which shall have included (as a regular part of the duties) the operation of precision stereoscopic instruments of either the direct-projection or the optical-train type. Applications will be accepted from persons who have 20 months' experience in operation of approved instruments, and they will be permitted to take the examination. However, the two- years required experience must be completed before they can be considered eligible for appointment. (Education of the type described in Pattern I may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for up to three years of the nonspecialized experience.) and
Education: Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Basic mathematics of photogrammetry including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry; stereoscopic instruments and photogrammetric applications; photo-identification of control; topographic and cartographic practice; aerial photographic practice; field procedure for control surveys; photo-interpretation; concepts of photogrammetric engineering; plans, specifications, and estimates for aerial survey contracts.
Ability to: Productively operate photogrammetric instruments and related equipment; assist in training personnel; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; prepare reports.
