Definition
Under supervision, on a temporary or seasonal basis only, to excavate in archeological sites; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Uses shovels, trowels, brushes, screens, and other archeologists' hand tools to open trenches in archeological sites; recovers and records artifacts and features revealed; removes, cleans, repairs, catalogs, and otherwise cares for the specimens recovered.
Abilities
Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; use a variety of hand tools including shovels, trowels, and small tools; perform varied manual tasks; follow oral and written directions; learn work procedures quickly; keep simple notes and records.
Special Personal Characteristics
An ability to perform heavy labor for sustained periods of time, often under difficult weather conditions and at various locations throughout the State; willingness to work on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays and at odd or irregular hours; ability to live and work under primitive outdoor conditions.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and experience in archeological field work similar to that performed on the job. A student of anthropology with formal class work in archeological field methods; archeological field experience under professional supervision; experience in basic museum techniques; a general knowledge of California's prehistoric cultures, and a knowledge of the California Indian tribes as they occurred at time of European contact.
