Definition

Under supervision, to do laboring work in connection with the maintenance and operation of a ferryboat and ferryboat equipment; and to do other related work.

Typical Tasks

Assists in loading and unloading motor vehicles and passengers; blocks wheels of motor vehicles; watches for gasoline leakage from motor vehicles; guards the leadline to prevent passengers from going beyond it; assists in enforcing regulations pertaining to smoking and stopping motor vehicle engines; participates in lifeboat and fire drills; in emergencies, lowers a lifeboat and mans it; acts as a lookout and watchperson and reports obstacles in the path of the vessel; handles lines for mooring vessel to wharves; performs routine cleaning and painting work in maintaining decks, cabins, lifeboats and life preserver equipment; maintains cooperative relationships with the traveling public.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of experience as a seaman or deckhand assisting in the operation of motor vessels having a length of at least 30 feet.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Work aboard ferryboats; operating gear on ferryboats.

 

Skill in: Handling and splicing lines.

 

Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; understand and carry out oral directions involving terms commonly used in ferryboat operations; swim and row a boat.

Special Personal Characteristics

Willingness to undertake hazardous assignments; agility and physical strength; courtesy and tact.

Drug Testing Requirement

Applicants for positions in this class are required to pass a drug screening test. Testing of current employees who are applicants in an examination or who are transferring is permitted only if the person does not have a current appointment to a class for which drug testing is a requirement.
