Definition

Under general direction in a State correctional facility in the Department of Corrections or Department of the Youth Authority, to have charge of repair and maintenance of automotive and other mechanical equipment in a repair shop; to supervise and work with journeyperson mechanics and helpers; to maintain order and supervise the conduct of inmates, wards, residents, or patients; to protect and maintain the safety of persons and property; may instruct, lead or supervise inmates, wards, or resident workers; and do other related work.

Typical Tasks

In a repair shop, supervises and instructs journeypersons and helpers in the repair of automobiles, trucks, tracklayers, graders, loaders, cranes, generators, compressors and other related mechanical equipment; inspects incoming equipment to determine repair work needed, estimates cost of repairs, and requisitions or purchases necessary parts; assigns, sets priority, and reviews progress of work; assists with repair and maintenance work as necessary; inspects and tests completed jobs; is responsibile for maintaining a stock of supplies and parts and for the care and maintenance of shop tools and equipment; periodically inspects assigned equipment for conformance to agency maintenance standards; instructs and trains agency personnel in the operation and maintenance of equipment; keeps required records and makes reports; maintains order and supervises the conduct of persons committed to the Departments of Corrections and the Youth Authority; prevents escapes and injury by these persons to themselves or others or to property; maintains security of working areas and work materials; inspects premises and searches inmates, wards, residents, or patients for contraband, such as weapons or illegal drugs.

Minimum Qualifications

Either Itwo Years of Experience in California State Service

 

performing the duties of a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. Or IIExperience: Two years of experience within the last five years as a journeyperson heavy equipment mechanic. and

 

Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as an automobile or heavy equipment mechanic. Or IIIExperience: Five years of experience within the last ten years as a journeyperson automobile or heavy equipment mechanic, two years of which must have been as a heavy equipment mechanic. andEducation: Equivalent to completion of the eighth grade. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of equipment, both gasoline and diesel, including passenger cars, light and heavy trucks, tracklaying tractors, and construction equipment; principles and methods of preventive maintenance; principles of effective supervision and planning and directing the work of a crew of mechanics and helpers.

 

Skill in: Use of necessary tools and the adjustment and repair of automotive and heavy equipment.

 

Ability to: Inspect equipment, locate defects, and estimate the cost of repairs; read, interpret, and work from plans, drawings, and specifications; plan and direct the work of a crew of mechanics and helpers; train personnel in the proper operation and maintenance of equipment; analyze situations and act effectively; keep necessary records and make reports.

Special Physical Characteristics

Persons appointed to positions in this class must be reasonably expected to have and maintain sufficient strength, agility, and endurance to perform during stressful (physical, mental, and emotional) situations encountered on the job without compromising their health and well-being or that of their fellow employees or that of inmates.

 

Assignments during tour of duty may include sole responsibility for the supervision of inmates and/or the protection of personal and real property.
