Definition

Under close supervision, to learn and perform the routine and nonprofessional tasks required by the surveying, drafting, hydrologic and engineering disciplines; construction contract administration work; and to do other related work.

Typical Tasks

Works as prism person, stake setter and marker, brush cutter, chainperson, or flagperson on survey or construction work; compiles statistical data and uses the data to construct graphs; prepares and/or checks survey and construction notes; does routine survey instrument work; plots well locations and updates well status on maps; makes simple inspections on engineering construction or maintenance work; provides assistance in traffic-related operations; prepares field samples of construction materials for testing; performs simple aggregate and compaction tests; prepares and reviews map revision reports; makes contour and land maps; plots engineering data on structure contour, and other types of maps; makes simple preliminary or construction drawings or tracings; makes elementary engineering computations; makes and/or checks routine quantity calculations; organizes and maintains construction-related drawings and documentation files; writes routine construction-related reports and corre- spondence; tabulates or plots field data; assists in installing, maintaining and operating hydrographic measuring devices; participates in various types of hydrologic investigations.

Minimum Qualifications

Either I

 

One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Service Assistant (Engineering).

Or II

 

One year of experience in engineering.

Or III

 

Education: Equivalent to completion of two semesters of academic course work at the high school level in drafting, algebra, or geometry.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Arithmetic and doing computing neatly and accurately; elemen- tary principles of algebra and geometry; and basic safe work practices to protect their own safety and health and that of others.

 

Ability to: Communicate effectively at a level required for successful job performance; do computing neatly and accurately; follow directions.

Additional Desirable Qualification

Education equivalent to completion of the 12th grade.

Alternate Range Criteria

These criteria will be used to allocate incumbents to Alternate Range A or Alternate Range B.

 

Range A. This range shall apply to incumbents who do not meet the criteria for payment in Range B.

 

Range B. This range shall apply to persons who have satisfactorily completed the equivalent of 12 months' experience as a Junior Engineering Technician, Range A, or have 12 months of experience performing the duties of a Sanitary Engineering Technician Trainee, Range A, or who have two years of nonpro- fessional engineering experience, or who possess evidence of completion of at least two years of curriculum in engineering beyond the twelfth grade.
