Definition

In the Office of State Printing, under direction of a Printing Plant Superintendent, to assist a Printing Plant Superintendent and supervise a group of employees and be responsible for a designated work function (within the Bindery, Composing Room or Pressroom); and/or be responsible for the Bindery, Composing Room or Pressroom function on a night or evening shift; and to do other related work.

Typical Tasks

Plans, organizes and directs the work in a production area; answers questions and gives advice on the more difficult technical problems; makes periodic inspections; maintains production and quality standards; develops new and more effective cost savings methods of operation; orders supplies and equipment; maintains discipline; assists in training programs; promotes and enforces safety rules; evaluates performance of personnel and takes or recommends appropriate action; assumes the duties of the Printing Plant Superintendent in his absence; keeps records and prepares reports; maintains an awareness of new trends and technology in the printing industry and how it applies to the Office of State Printing.

Minimum Qualifications

Either Ione Year of Experience in the California State Service

 

performing the duties of a journey level Bindery, Composing Room or Pressroom employee in the Office of State Printing. and

 

Twenty-four units of college level courses in business/management (two years of full-time supervisory experience may be substituted for the required education at the rate of one year for 12 units).

Or II

 

Two years of journey level experience in a printing or reproduction facility employing 25 or more persons. and

 

Twenty-four units of college level courses in business/management (two years of full-time supervisory experience may be substituted for the required education at the rate of one year for 12 units).

Or III

 

The equivalent of a Baccalaureate Degree in either (1) Industrial Technology with a Printing Management Option, or (2) Graphic Communications.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in a large printing plant production operation; maintenance procedures required in the production operation; safety practices; principles and techniques of effective supervision; the department's Affirmative Action Program and the processes available to meet affirmative action objectives; and labor relations principles and policies.

 

Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; plan and supervise the work of others; estimate time required to complete jobs; establish and maintain quality controls; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; administer labor management contracts; keep records and prepare reports; and effectively contribute to the department's affirmative action objectives.
