Definition

Under general direction, to be responsible for the operation, maintenance and navigation of a State-owned boat on bays and inland waterways; and to do other related work.

Distinguishing Characteristics

An employee in this class is responsible for the operation and maintenance of boats of not more than 50 gross tons, used for transporting State employees, their families, and others having official business with the State. Incumbents operate boats used to transport materials, supplies and equipment used in the construction or maintenance of State-owned facilities. The boats may be powered by either an inboard gasoline or marine diesel engine.

Typical Tasks

Safely operate and maintain large State-owned boats powered by inboard gasoline or marine diesel engines which transport employees, their families, official visitors, materials, supplies and equipment; schedule and perform routine maintenance to the vessel; operate, maintain, and make minor repairs to gasoline or marine diesel engines; make minor repairs and adjustments to piping, wiring, pumps and other mechanical systems; make recommendations for major engine and hull repair work; may perform minor maintenance and repair to floating docks and related structures to which State vessels are secured; train unskilled assistants; keep records of boat operation and maintenance; prepare reports.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a current Master 50 Gross Tons Great Lakes and Inland Waters License issued by the United States Coast Guard and a current Marine Radio Operator's Permit issued by the Federal Communications Commission. (Applicants who do not possess the required license and permit will be admitted to the examination, but must secure the license and permit before they will be considered eligible for appointment.) and Proof of having completed the requirements for a United States Coast Guard Radar Endorsement Certificate for inland waters. (Individuals who have not completed the requirements for this certificate may be appointed to the class, but must secure proof of having completed the requirements within six months of appointment.)

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Methods, materials and tools used in the operation and maintenance of gasoline or marine diesel motor boats; United States Coast Guard regulations relating to the operation and navigation of motor vessels in inland waters and bays; fuels and lubricants; nautical terminology.

 

Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; operate and maintain a boat of not more than 50 gross tons; direct the work of unskilled assistants; plan for the annual maintenance and overhaul of engines, hulls and auxiliary equipment in shipyards, or specialized work as required; establish and maintain cooperative relations with the general public; swim 50 yards and stay afloat at least five minutes; utilize a radar system to assist in the safe navigation and operation of a State vessel.

Special Personal Characteristics

Physical strength and agility; willingness to work on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays and at odd or irregular hours.

Drug Testing Requirement

Applicants for positions in this class are required to pass a drug screening test. Testing of current employees who are applicants in an examination or who are transferring is permitted only if the person does not have a current appointment to a class for which drug testing is a requirement.

Additional Desirable Qualification

Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
