Definition

Under general direction, to supervise the work of a machine shop and to be responsible for the maintenance of equipment and the design and manufacture of special equipment; and to do other related work.

Typical Tasks

Assigns work, gives instructions, establishes the work schedule, and passes on difficult mechanical problems in connection with the supervision of skilled craftspersons engaged in the manufacture, repair, and installation of all types of field and laboratory testing machines and equipment and in the general mechanical maintenance of laboratory equipment, requiring machine work, electrical, plumbing, or similar repairs; personally repairs tools and equipment or is responsible for securing and directing the work of various skilled craftspersons required to maintain the efficient operation of all laboratory equipment; takes orders for repairs or construction of new equipment; discusses requirements with engineers and makes original designs, or assists with the design of tools or equipment for specific functions, or designs improvements on existing equipment; prepares rough sketches and working drawings for use of shop machinists; makes occasional field surveys on special assignments; as required, performs bench work on machine and hand tools; arranges for the contracting of work and checks to see that work is properly performed; compiles estimates on costs of materials for proposed new equipment or maintenance work; orders all material and equipment for the machine shop at the testing laboratory and supplies field laboratories with material and equipment as required; maintains records of work in progress; and prepares reports and correspondence.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Either

 

1. Two years of experience performing the duties of a Machinist and Equipment Fabricator in the California state service. or

 

2. Two years of experience as a journey level tool and die maker or as a journey level machinist in work involving the construction, installation, and repair of instruments and other equipment, and one year of supervisory experience in a machine shop. (Should include extensive experience and skills in machine setup and proficiency in the use of all standard machine shop equipment.)

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the construction, maintenance, or repair of field and laboratory testing machines, tools, and equipment; fundamental principles of physics, mechanics, and mathematics as applied to the design and construction of such equipment; electrical motors used to run machine shop and laboratory equipment; principles of effective supervision; a manager's/supervisor's responsibility for promoting equal opportunity in hiring and employee development and promotion and for maintaining a work environment that is free of discrimination and harassment.

 

Ability to: Communicate effectively; estimate time and costs necessary to make needed repairs to equipment; design special equipment and supervise its construction; prepare working sketches and work from plans, sketches, and instructions; work effectively with others; plan and direct the work of others; effectively control and coordinate the work to meet the schedule requirements; analyze situations and take effective action; effectively promote equal opportunity in employment and maintain a work environment that is free of discrimination and harassment.

Creativity in finding solutions to equipment repair and fabrication problems.

Additional Desirable Qualification

Education equivalent to completion of the 12th grade.
