Supervisors Guide to Performance and Progressive Discipline

Overview

Presented by CalHR Legal Division House Counsel:This course provides an overview of managing state employee performance and progressive discipline through three phases: performance management phase, corrective phase, and discipline phase. It includes a supervisor’s role during the hiring and onboarding process, setting expectations, training, evaluating, and mentoring staff to ensure performance consistent with the job requirements.

This class also addresses the supervisor’s role in correcting employee performance, including counseling employees, and drafting counseling memoranda. Lastly, the class familiarizes a supervisor with the adverse action or formal discipline phase. This class complements the online CalHR’s Supervisors Guide to Addressing Poor Performance and the Virtual Help Desk for Supervisors and Managers.

Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the progressive performance. management/progressive discipline process.
  • Categorize performance expectations.
  • Demonstrate applicable documentation principles.
  • Define the difference in each phase of the performance management/progressive discipline.

Intended Audience

This class is open to State employees in the Executive Branch. Managers, Supervisors, Human Resources and Labor Relations staff who are involved in or require knowledge of the progressive discipline process. Employees from multiple areas of a department are encouraged to attend as a team so that everyone has the same understanding of performance management.
