Definition

Under general direction, to perform inspection and investigation work for the Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers; and to do other work as required.

Typical Tasks

Makes inspections of funeral establishments and sees that proper standards are maintained according to law, and that directors, embalmers, and apprentices are properly licensed; reports violations of law to a district attorney and assists him in preparing court cases; conducts investigations and collects evidence, including photographic evidence, for disciplinary hearings and court cases; appears as witness in court; and prepares reports.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a valid California Embalmer's License. andTwo years of experience as a licensed embalmer or funeral director in the State of California.

Knowledges and Abilities

Knowledge of: Practices of the funeral service industry; State laws, rules, and regulations regarding individuals and businesses licensed by the Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers; investigation and inspection methods and techniques: rules of evidence and procedures followed in administrative hearings.

 

Ability to: Interpret and apply sections of State laws which relate to individuals and businesses licensed by the Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers; learn and apply inspection and investigation methods and techniques to the inspection and investigation of funeral establishments; enforce all laws and rules applying to the funeral service industry; prepare clear and comprehensive reports; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the work; speak effectively and deal with the public courteously and impartially.
