Definition

Under the general direction of a Professional Program Chief in Material and Child Health, to plan, organize, develop, implement, and conduct hearing conservation programs on a statewide basis; to formulate standards and criteria for, and to recommend the granting of, certificates of registration as school audiometrists; and to do other related work.

Typical Tasks

Plans, organizes, develops, implements, and conducts a statewide hearing testing program for children; reviews the qualifications of applicants for, and recommends the granting of, certificates of registration as school audiometrists; evaluates and approves curricula offered by colleges and universities for the purpose of meeting the requirements for training school audiometrists; provides technical assistance and consultation to institutions which are developing programs for training audiometrists; correlates State hearing conservation programs with those of other groups; visits and serves as consultant to local health departments, hospitals, school districts, CHDP programs, colleges, and universities throughout California on matters pertaining to hearing testing programs for infants and children; assists with planning and administration of case finding and follow-up activities for school and preschool children; cooperates with school districts in supervising and observing audiometric testing of school children; confers with parents, teachers, and health professionals regarding results of tests; plans and conducts training workshops and institutes for the training of health professionals, school audiometrists, teachers, and others who conduct hearing screening; formulates standards and criteria for hearing testing; maintains surveillance over and evaluates adequacy of hearing testing in schools; establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with local health departments, health professionals, school districts, and civic groups; addresses interested groups; collects data on hearing testing; and writes articles, booklets, and other materials on hearing conservation for publication.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a valid license to practice audiology in California as determined by the Speech Pathology and Audiology Examining Committee of the California Board of Medical Quality Assurance. (Includes possession of a Master's Degree in Audiology, Audiology/Speech Pathology, or deemed equivalent as defined by the Speech Pathology and Audiology Examining Committee.) and Experience: Three years of experience in developing standards for, and planning hearing conservation programs, which shall have included hearing testing, and Education: Possession of a Master's Degree in Audiology, Audiology/Speech Pathology, or related field.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Principles of hearing testing and hearing conservation from infancy through childhood; speech and language pathology resulting from hearing loss in children; all hearing testing problems and equipment, e.g., pure tone audiometer, tympanometry, and speech audiometer; physiology of hearing and the mechanics of speech development and communication skills; public health and education programs for hearing impairments; training programs and resources for training in audiometry and hearing conservation.

 

Ability to: Plan, organize, develop, and implement hearing conservation programs for infants and children; develop and maintain the support and cooperation of professional and lay groups; speak and write effectively; formulate standards and criteria for hearing testing; train health professionals and nonmedical personnel in the administration of hearing screening tests; analyze situations accurately and take effective action.

Special Personal Characteristics

Understanding of psychological problems of children with defective hearing; willingness to travel throughout the State; and tact.

Additional Desirable Qualification

Certification of clinical competence in audiology by the American Speech and Hearing Association.
