Definition

Under supervision, to do work involved in rigging for painting, and cleaning and painting structural steel bridges and related structures and facilities; and to do other related work.

Typical Tasks

Cleans, scrapes, wire brushes, steam cleans, or abrasive blast cleans surfaces in preparation for painting; applies under the finish coats of paint with brush, roller, or spray equipment; mixes paints; rigs, erects, or moves manual, pneumatic, or electric power-operated scaffolding and staging; cleans brushes, tools, and other equipment; paints simple signs; may be required to operate vehicles necessary for the transportation of personnel, equipment, and hazardous materials.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a valid Class C driver license. (Applicants who do not possess the license will be allowed to compete in the examination but license must be obtained prior to appointment. An unrestricted Class B driver license must be obtained by the end of the six-month probationary period.) and Either I Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a Structural Steel Painter. (Apprentices who are within six months of completing their apprenticeships may be admitted to the examination, but they must present evidence of completion before they may be appointed.)

Or II

 

Two years of experience in painting structural steel bridges or structural steel involving work at considerable heights (experience should include painting-related functions such as surface cleaning and metal preparation; paint mixing and application; and rigging, operating, and maintaining manual, pneumatic, or power-operated equipment). and

 

Education: Completion of the minimum number of hours of formalized technical instruction prescribed by the Department of Industrial Relations relating to Structural Steel Painter offered by such established programs as: Job Corps; Skills Centers; ROP; Trades Schools; Military; and JTPA (Joint Training Partnership Act). (Two additional qualifying years of experience may be substituted for the required education.)

Or III

 

Three years of experience as a painter, six months of which must have included painting structural steel bridges or structural steel involving work at considerable heights (experience should include painting-related functions such as surface cleaning and metal preparation; paint mixing and application; and rigging, operating, and maintaining manual, pneumatic, or power-related equipment). and

 

Education: Completion of the minimum number of hours of formalized technical instruction prescribed by the Department of Industrial Relations relating to Structural Steel Painter offered by such established programs as: Job Corps; Skills Centers; ROP; Trades Schools; Military; and JTPA (Joint Training Partnership Act). (Two additional qualifying years of experience may be substituted for the required education.)

 

(Additional qualifying experience as a ship's boatswain, rigger, structural steel erector, or craftsperson on heavy construction corresponding to bridge construction may be substituted for the three-year painters' requirement on a year-for-year basis. All candidates using alternate qualifying experience must have six months of experience in painting structural steel bridges within the three years of the qualifying experience.)

Or IV

 

Five years of experience in painting structural steel bridges or structural steel involving work at considerable heights (experience should include painting-related functions such as surface cleaning and metal preparation; paint mixing and application; and rigging, operating, and maintaining manual, pneumatic, or power-operated equipment).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of: Methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in painting structural steel, cables, and bridges; paint colors; use and maintenance of manila rope, wire rope, and rigging aids; methods and equipment used in abrasive blasting and steam cleaning steel surfaces or current state of the art practices used in preparing steel surfaces for painting; air tools, hoists, and equipment used in erecting and moving heavy scaffolds and scaffold machines.

 

Skill in: Painting by brush, roller, and spray equipment methods.

 

Ability to: Mix paint; rig, erect, and move scaffolds and staging and work from high nonstationary scaffolding; follow instructions; understand safety and equipment operations manuals.

Special Personal Characteristics

Ability to work safely at heights of at least 200 feet above ground or water on structural steel bridges and the ability to withstand working continuously under adverse (e.g., cold, wet, windy) weather conditions; freedom from lead poisoning as suggested by a blood lead level test; ability and willingness to use respiratory equipment when abrasive blasting, painting, and performing other duties which require respiratory protection; willingness and ability to travel and work short periods of time throughout California; visual and color acuity sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.

Additional Desirable Qualification

Possession of H (Hazardous Materials) and N (Tank Vehicle) driver license endorsements or an H (Hazardous Materials)/N (Tank Vehicle) endorsement.

Drug Testing Requirement

Applicants for positions in this class are required to pass a drug- screening test. Testing of current employees who are applicants in an examination or who are transferring is permitted only if the person does not have a current appointment to a class for which drug testing is a requirement.
