Under direction, for short-term projects, to perform skilled seam caulking work for ship repair or restoration; and to do other related work.
This classification is distinguished by the fact that employment is for less than six months' duration with no permanent employment. Its duration may vary from an hour to several months or longer, dependent upon the size and complexity of the project and number of persons available to complete the job. Although the employment may be recurrent, it is definitely of a broken nature and assignment is from job to job.
Reefs out old tar and oakum caulking; fills deck or planking seams to correct level with new caulking material before paying; spins and prepares oakum for caulking; melts and ladles pitch when paying deck seams, or uses seam compound instead of pitch in designated areas; finishes caulking work at ends of exposed decking or planking; prepares estimates of caulking work; keeps tools and equipment in good condition; instructs and leads unskilled assistants; as required, keeps simple records and makes reports.
Experience: One year of experience as a journeyman caulker on wooden ships.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Materials, methods, tools and equipment used in caulking wooden ships and the appropriate sections of other ships.
Ability to: Read and work from plans and specifications; prepare estimates of material and labor required for ship caulking work; instruct and lead unskilled assistants; keep simple records and make reports; read and write at a level appropriate to the classification.
