Definition

Under direction, to supervise and coordinate the control center unit in the operation and control of aqueduct facilities and hydroelectric generating and pumping plants in an operation and maintenance field division; and to do other related work.

Typical Tasks

Plans, schedules, supervises and coordinates the work of the control center unit; insures continuity in the implementation of operating policies and procedures in the various plants throughout an operation and maintenance zone; makes decisions regarding safe working conditions; insures that schedules of water releases, pumping and generation are carried out; implements general policy and procedural directives from the Hydroelectric Plant Operations Superintendent; trains subordinates; prepares reports.

Minimum Qualifications

Either I

 

Two years of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Senior Hydroelectric Plant Operator.

Or II

 

Five years of progressively responsible operations experience in one or a combination of the following: hydroelectric generating plants; large (at least 25,000 hp) pumping plants; high voltage switching and clearances in large (at least 100 mw) steam plants. (Experience in substations or switching yards of at least 230 kv may be substituted for two years of the required experience.) Two years of the qualifying experience must have been either as a shift supervisor or independently in charge of the operation and control of a remote generating or pumping plant.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Functional characteristics of generating and pumping units and auxiliary machinery, busses, switches, control circuits, valves, checks, reservoirs, spillways, metering and other water control devices; fundamentals of electricity, hydraulics and hydrology; principles of effective supervision; department's Affirmative Action Program objectives; a manager's role in the Affirmative Action Program and the processes available to meet affirmative action objectives.

 

Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; operate manual and automated control systems; plan and direct the work of others; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; write reports; schedule shifts to maintain continuity of operations; effectively contribute to the department's affirmative action objectives.

Special Physical Requirements

Normal sense of smell and hearing.

Additional Desirable Qualification

Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
