Definition

Under direction, to plan, organize and direct the operation of all hydroelectric generating and pumping plants and the water distribution facilities within an operation and maintenance field division; and to do other related work.

Typical Tasks

Directs all power and water operations in a field division; prepares the daily schedule for water and power movement and switching and directs its implementation; supervises and trains operators and water control technicians; insures that required surveillance and records are maintained; keeps the Chief of the field division and Control Central informed as to the current status of operations; insures that clearance procedures and safety order are properly disseminated and followed; supervises the planning, budgeting and cost control of all operating activities within the field division.

Minimum Qualifications

Either I

 

Two years of experience in the California state service performing hydroelectric generating or pumping plant operations activities in a supervisory capacity comparable in level to that of Chief Hydroelectric Plant Operator.

Or II

 

Five years of progressively responsible experience in the operation of large hydroelectric generating or pumping plants, three years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Functional characteristics and location of main generating and pumping units and auxiliary machinery, busses, switches, control circuits, valves, checks, reservoirs, spillways, metering and other water control devices; operation of the State Water Project; fundamentals of electricity, hydraulics and hydrology; principles of effective supervision; project budgeting; personnel selection and training; safety practices of the Department of Water Resources; department's affirmative action program objectives; a manager's role in the affirmative action program and the processes available to meet affirmative action objectives.

 

Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; operate manual and automated control systems; plan and direct the work of others; prepare reports; compile budget estimates; prepare and administer safety program; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; dictate correspondence; effectively contribute to the department's affirmative action objectives.

Additional Desirable Qualification

Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
