Definition

Under direction, to supervise and work with a crew engaged in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment in hydro electric generating or pumping plants; and to do other related work.

Typical Tasks

Plans, lays out, supervises, and inspects the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical equipment in a hydroelectric generating or pumping plant including large motors, generators, transformers, circuit breakers, switches, and relays; makes diagrams and sketches and prepares estimates of job costs; recommends the selection of electrical materials; inspects malfunctions of electrical systems and determines corrective action to be taken; trains employees in safe work practices; keeps records and prepares reports.

Minimum Qualifications

Either I

 

Two years of experience in California state service performing the duties of a Hydroelectric Plant Electrician I.

Or II

 

Three years of journeyperson experience performing electrical maintenance and repair work on the heavy equipment used in electrical generating or pumping plants.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Principles, methods, materials, tools and equipment, and the application of electrical theory as used in maintenance, repair and replacement of high voltage electrical systems and equipment used at hydroelectric generating and pumping plants; National Electric Code and the Electrical Safety Orders of the Division of Occupational Safety and Health; principles of effective supervision; mathematics normally required of this trade.

 

Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; install, maintain and repair large electrical equipment; plan, lay out, supervise, and inspect the work of a crew of plant electricians and helpers; analyze trouble in electrical circuits and equipment and take corrective action; supervise and work with a maintenance crew; prepare rough sketches and cost estimates of electrical work; read blueprints and work from plans and specifications; keep simple records and make reports; in sure that effective safety practices are understood and observed.

Additional Desirable Qualification

Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
