Definition

Under direction, to plan, organize, and direct all maintenance and repair work on generating, pumping, and auxiliary plant equipment within an operation and maintenance field division; and to do other related work.

Typical Tasks

Plans, assigns, and supervises the work of an electrical and plant maintenance technical staff engaged in the repair and maintenance of electrical generating, pumping, and auxiliary equipment systems within a designated field division; reviews and determines the quality of operation and maintenance of all plant equipment; schedules and conducts periodic plant equipment inspections and determines degree and extent of required repair and maintenance; coordinates and directs electrical and mechanical maintenance and repair programs; makes recommendations on economical and safe operation and maintenance policies and procedures; plans, budgets, and provides cost-control data relative to plant maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications

Either I

 

Two years of experience in the California state service performing operations and maintenance, or engineering testing work on hydroelectric generating and pumping plant facilities at the level of either a Hydroelectric Plant Electrical Supervisor or Hydroelectric Plant Mechanical Supervisor.

Or II

 

Five years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance of hydroelectric generating or pumping plants, three years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: The application of engineering principles as applied to electrical and mechanical maintenance of hydroelectric facilities; maintenance requirements and procedures relating to pumping, generating, and auxiliary equipment within an operation and maintenance zone; operating characteristics of heavy rotating machinery and auxiliary equipment used in the system; operation of the State Water Project; physical and chemical properties of materials used in maintenance work; principles of effective supervision; personnel selection and training; safety practices of the Department of Water Resources; project budgeting; practices, procedures, equipment and tools used in plant maintenance work; department's affirmative action program objectives; a manager's role in the affirmative action program and the processes available to meet affirmative action objectives.

 

Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; take prompt and effective action in the event of major equipment breakdown or other plant emergency; plan and direct the work of others; prepare reports; compile budget estimates; prepare and administer a safety program; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; dictate correspondence; effectively contribute to the department's affirmative action objectives.
