California State Personnel Board Specification
Under general supervision, in a research and statistics setting, (1) to perform the more difficult clerical work required in compiling, reviewing, computing, and presenting various statistical data; or (2) to supervise a small group of employees engaged in the more routine, less complex statistical clerical work; and to do other related work.
As a clerical assistant to a professional research or statistics employee:
Makes difficult calculations used for various tests of statistical significance and computes a variety of descriptive statistics using formulas as prescribed; gathers and compiles into usable form information from complex documents requiring the use of independent initiative and judgment to differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate data; in accordance with general instructions, determines format of graphs, charts and tables; may compose detailed footnotes required to clarify numerical data included in graphic presentations; reviews documents, questionnaires, and reports for completeness and internal consistency and codes for mechanical tabulating and processing; operates calculator and adding machine; may operate sorter, lister, and other less complex data processing equipment; may prepare typewritten materials of a graphic or narrative nature; or
As a supervisor:
Plans, organizes, and assigns work to a small group of employees, or assists in the supervision of a larger group, engaged in routine review or coding of documents or simple arithmetic calculations for which standards and guides are well established; personally performs more difficult statistical clerical work; schedules day-to-day work and insures tha deadlines are met; establishes work forms and procedures; trains employees, evaluates their performance, and takes or recommends appropriate action.
Experience: Either 1. Two years of experience in the California state service performing general and statistical clerical duties in a class with a level of responsibility equivalent to that of Office Assistant II (General); or
2. Three years of experience in general and statistical clerical work. (Academic education above the twelfth grade may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of either (a) one year of general education being equivalent to three months of experience; or (b) one year of education of a business or commercial nature being equivalent to six months of experience.) and
Education: Equivalent to two courses in mathematics at either the high school or college level which shall have included one year of algebra or bookkeeping or commercial arithmetic.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Arithmetic techniques used to summarize numerical data; modern office methods, supplies and equipment; business English; principles of effective supervision and training; Department's Affirmative Action Program objectives; a manager's role in the Affirmative Action Program and the processes available to meet affirmative action objectives.
Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; make difficult arithmetic computations with speed and accuracy and recognize inconsistencies in results; translate formula symbols into numerical terms and solve for desired result; review a variety of materials including data processing tabulations and determine appropriate groupings for similar data; prepare various charts, tables, and graphs; supervise the work of clerical assistants; perform difficult clerical work including ability to spell correctly and use good English; speak and write effectively; follow oral and written directions; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; operate a calculator and adding machine; effectively contribute to the department's affirmative action objectives.

Additional Desirable Qualifications
Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Completion of a course or courses in statistics; ability to operate a typewriter; ability and aptitude to learn to operate listers, sorters, and other simpler data processing equipment.
