Definition

Under supervision, learns to operate, maintain and perform all functions assigned to the pre-press area including Rachwal and conventional camera operation, lithographic platemaking and imposition, and negative stripping; and to do other related work.

Typical Tasks

Learns and assists with Rachwal and conventional camera operations; develops, splices and files film; learns and assists with Rachwal impositions and computer programs and makes plates on computerized system; performs limited maintenance service on camera, processor and related film equipment; learns from and assists the Lithographic Platemaker in all facets making plates; makes dyluxes and color proofs; maintains stock inventory, keeps work area clean, maintains and services equipment as per the preventive maintenance schedules, performs general floor work; learns and assists with imposition and stripping in the negative assembly and copy-prep areas; shoots line work, half-tones/duo-tones on the process camera and maintains and operates all related equipment; reads and understands job tickets.

Minimum Qualifications

Either I

 

One year of experience performing the duties of a Printing Trades Assistant II in the California state service.

Or II

 

Two years of experience performing the duties of a Printing Trades Assistant I in the California state service.

Or III

 

Three years of experience as a General Floor Helper in a printing plant that employs 25 or more persons.

Or IV

 

Completion of a minimum of 20 units of college level courses in the printing field with an emphasis on Lithography.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Basic equipment, processes and practices of a printing plant.

 

Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; be a good communicator; be well organized; detail oriented; quality conscious; make minor decisions.

Special Personal Characteristics

Willingness to work various shifts (day, evening, or night); have an interest and display an aptitude for pressroom pre-press work.

Additional Desirable Qualification

Education equivalent to the twelfth grade.
