Definition

Under direction, to operate heavy or complex construction equipment; to do miscellaneous laboring work when not engaged in the operation of equipment; and to do other related work.

Typical Tasks

Operates, services, and makes minor adjustments and repairs to trucks, large wheel tractors, bulldozers, motor graders, snowplowing equipment, street sweepers, loaders, scarifiers, and other types of heavy equipment on Military Department facilities; assists in resurfacing, oiling and patching roads; cleans ditches, culverts and other drainage structures; loads and unloads trucks; and does other laboring work.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a Class 3 driver license which is valid for the operation of any bus designed to carry more than 15 passengers, any single vehicle with three or more axles, any such vehicle towing another vehicle weighing less than 6,000 pounds gross, and all vehicles covered under Class 3. and Either I One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties comparable to a Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker or Caltrans Landscape Maintenance Worker.

Experience: Either

 

1. Two years of experience in the California state service performing duties comparable to Laborer including training in operation of heavy or complex maintenance or construction equipment. or

 

2. One year of experience within the last ten years (this time limitation is extended for a period equivalent to that spent in recognized military service during the last ten years) in operating highway construction or maintenance equipment or in operating tractors, graders, or trucks of at least four tons rated capacity on other work.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Provisions of the California Vehicle Code applying to the operation of vehicles; equipment maintenance procedures; construction equipment and operation, servicing, minor adjustment, and emergency repair of such equipment.

 

Skill in: Operating construction equipment and making minor adjustments and emergency repairs to such equipment.

 

Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; follow oral and written directions; keep simple records.

Special Physical Characteristics

Normal hearing and visual acuity (with or without glasses) of not less than 20/40; normal use of both hands and feet and physical strength and agility.
