Definition

Under supervision, assists in the operation and maintenance of foundation exploration and testing equipment; and does other related work.

Typical Tasks

Rigs, and assists in operating drilling equipment in foundation boring, including rotary drilling, jetting, and sampling with special foundation exploration and testing tools; takes charge and operates the equipment when an extra shift is necessary or during the leadworker's absence; assists in greasing, repairing, and servicing drilling equipment and maintaining it in a safe and suitable condition; drives trucks containing drilling equipment; and performs manual labor.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a valid and unrestricted Class B driver license. (Applicants who do not possess the license will be allowed to compete in the examination but license must be obtained prior to appointment.) and Experience: Two years of experience as a helper on foundation exploration or well drilling equipment, including experience in either the operation of soil sampling or diamond drilling equipment.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Tools and equipment used in well and foundation drilling and testing work, including use of soil sampling or diamond drilling equipment; foundation exploration methods.

 

Ability to: Rig and set up drilling equipment; drive trucks and operate drilling equipment; climb steep slopes and work on difficult terrain; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; communicate effectively.

Special Personal Characteristics

Willingness to travel in performing drilling work for short periods throughout the State; physical ability sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.

Drug Testing Requirement

Applicants for positions in this class are required to pass a drug screening test. Testing of current employees who are applicants in an examination or who are transferring is permitted only if the person does not have a current appointment to a class for which drug testing is a requirement.
