Definition

Under general direction, perform analysis of multifaceted reinsurance treaties and evaluation of reinsurance programs of insurance companies to determine legality and propriety of operations; and to do other related work.

Typical Tasks

Participates in more complex reinsurance examinations; is assigned more complex reinsurance contracts and reinsurance programs analysis; evaluates legal or technical deficiencies or problems in reinsurance arrangement of insurance companies; provides technical advise and assistance to professional staff of the Department; monitors ongoing industry reinsurance activity and recommends corrective action.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Three years of increasingly responsible professional experience in the reinsurance operations of business enterprises or as an actuary, financial examiner, auditor, accountant, or in some other capacity requiring a knowledge of reinsurance underwriting, accounting and applicable laws. and

 

Education: Equivalent to graduation from college preferably in insurance, finance, economics, or actuarial science. (Experience with an insurance company performing professional accounting or technical underwriting or claims work may be substituted for the educational requirements on the basis of one year of experience for each year of college work up to a maximum of two years.)

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: General reinsurance underwriting principles and procedures; financial practices and procedures used in insurance companies; insurance accounting and uniform accounting systems prescribed for insurance companies; financial organization and practices of various types of insurance companies; provisions of the law governing insurance companies, related legal opinions and court decisions; and business law.

 

Ability to: Apply general reinsurance underwriting principles and procedures; evaluate financial practices and procedures and provisions of the law governing insurance companies, related legal opinions and court decisions; act as a technical advisor in the reinsurance examinations of accounts and records of insurance companies subject to State regulations; gather, organize and summarize financial data; analyze data and draw sound conclusions; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; prepare clear, complete, concise reports; establish and maintain cooperative relations with those contacted in the work; communicate effectively.

Special Personal Characteristics

Willingness to travel and work away from the headquarters office.
