Definition

Under direction, in the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development, to review and approve the design and construction of hospitals, nursing and convalescent homes, and related health facilities; and to do other related work.

Typical Tasks

Reviews the more complex plans and specifications of health facilities for compliance with State and Federal requirements; organizes and coordinates the review of hospital building plans with other specialists and consultants; provides consultation and technical advice to architects in the design and construction of health facilities; advises the professional and lay public relative to laws and regulations governing the design and construction of health facilities; maintains awareness of current and proposed revisions of applicable Federal and State building codes; confers with other governmental agencies and with private professional groups engaged in health facilities design; conducts inspections of health facility construction to ensure compliance with specifications and resolves minor construction problems; may act as a leadperson involved with the work of the Architectural Assistants in the Facilities Construction Section; maintains awareness of changing concepts on the operation, design and construction of health facilities; evaluates the operation and effectiveness of existing health facilities; appraises the operational functioning of recently completed health facilities in comparison to the original planning concepts; reviews construction change orders to conformity to applicable codes; prepares cost estimates of construction and equipment of health facilities, prepares technical reports and correspondence.

Minimum Qualifications

Either I

 

Two years of experience in the California state service performing the duties of an Architectural Assistant, Range B, at least one year of which shall have been in the design or review of architectural plans and specifications for hospitals, nursing and convalescent homes, and related health facilities.

Or II

 

Experience: Fours years of experience in architectural planning and design of a wide variety of buildings, including at least one year in the design or review of architectural plans and specifications for hospitals, nursing and convalescent homes, and related health facilities. and

 

Education: Equivalent to graduation from college with major work in architecture. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Architecture and architectural practice of planning and design of public buildings; building materials and construction methods; hospital planning and design; State and Federal requirements for hospitals, nursing homes and other health facilities; structural, mechanical and electrical engineering as related to buildings; building costs and building codes.

 

Ability to: Prepare clear and comprehensive reports; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
