Definition

Under direction, to do routine chemical testing engineering work in the analysis of engineering construction and other materials; and to do other related work.

Typical Tasks

Makes routine chemical analyses of raw materials and finished pro ducts, such as: ferrous and nonferrous metals, protective coatings, traffic line paints and other paints, fuel and weed oils, asphaltic materials, cement, and concrete aggregates, soils, foundation materials, water, water for concrete, and other engineering or miscellaneous materials; prepares and standardizes solutions used in analytical work.

Minimum Qualifications

Either I

 

Education: Equivalent to graduation from college with major work in chemistry or chemical engineering. (Registration as a senior in a recognized institution will admit applicants to the examination, but they must produce evidence of graduation or its equivalent before they can be considered eligible for appointment.)

Or II

 

Two years of chemical testing engineering experience which shall have been on construction materials.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: General chemical laboratory testing procedure and equipment, and organic and inorganic chemistry as applied to the testing of highway and building construction and other materials; standard specifications and tests of the American Society of Testing Materials; uses of the materials of engineering construction.

 

Skill in: Making chemical tests and analyses.

 

Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; work cooperatively with others; prepare reports.

Special Personal Characteristic

Accuracy in maming chemical tests and analyses.

Additional Desirable Qualification

Education equivalent to completion of the 12th grade.
