Series established May 9, 1963

Scope

This series specification describes classes which perform skilled structural drafting and design work in State service.

Structural Design Technician Series Specification - Class Titles and Codes
Schem Code Class Code Class
GB60 3038 Structural Design Technician I
GB50 3037 Structural Design Technician II
GB40 3036 Structural Design Technician III

Definition of Series

This series is available for use throughout State service. Under the direct supervision of an engineer, incumbents in these classes do structural technician work involved in the preparation of structural design and construction drawings; prepare quantity estimates; perform geometric design; at the higher levels, assist in the preparation of complete sets of plans, drafting details, and standards from design charts and aids; check drafting and details prepared by others; act as leadperson; assist in the preparation of specifications and cost estimates; and do other related work.

Entry Level

Entry into this series is typically through the class of Structural Design Technician I.

Factors Affecting Position Allocation

Level, variety, and complexity of assignments; degree of independent action, skill, and decision; degree of direction exercised/received; and in the higher classes, degree of checking/leadperson responsibility.

Definition of Levels

Structural Design Technician I

This is the entry and first journey level of the series. Under supervision, incumbents prepare simple drawings and assist in the preparation of complete design, construction, and as-built drawings for a variety of structures from design notes and sketches; make related engineering calculations and plot data from field notes; prepare quantity estimates; check shop plans; calculate horizontal and vertical alignment and related dimensions of structures for layout of average difficulty; use state-of-the-art technology, i.e., Computer-Aided Drafting/Design (CADD) and related programs, to determine layout and details of various types of structures; and assist in geometric design of average difficulty.

Structural Design Technician II

This is the full journey level in the series. Under direction, incumbents prepare difficult or assist in the preparation of complex design, construction, and as-built drawings for a variety of structures from design notes and sketches; make related engineering calculations and plot data from field notes; do structural drafting work of above average difficulty, requiring skill, initiative, and accuracy; calculate vertical and horizontal alignment and related dimensions of structures for layout of above average difficulty; secure information in the field for the preparation of drawings to modify existing structures; check drafting work for accuracy of drafting and dimensioning; prepare quantity estimates; use state-of-the-art technology, i.e., CADD and related complex computer programs to determine layout, details, and geometric design of various types of structures; and act as a leadperson on less difficult projects in the preparation of plans, specifications, and estimates.

Structural Design Technician III

This is the advanced journey level in the series. Under general direction, incumbents prepare complete sets of contract drawings for the most difficult and complex steel, concrete, masonry, and timber structures; make preliminary and final layouts of various types of structures; plot preliminary site data and prepare as-built plans of structures; calculate and check quantities for preliminary and final estimates of structure costs; check completed drawings for accuracy, completeness of details, and constructibility; prepare drafting details and standards from design charts and aids; check drafting and details prepared by others; make engineering calculations for dimensioning and laying out the most complex structures; do structural drafting work of a highly specialized and complex nature requiring superior skill, initiative, and accuracy; use state-of-the-art technology, i.e., CADD and related highly complex computer programs to determine layout, details, and geometric design of the most difficult kind for various types of structures; secure information in the field for the preparation of drawings to modify existing structures; prepare and act in a lead capacity in the preparation of plans and quantity estimates for a wide variety of structures including bridges, buildings, tunnels, walls, drainage systems, and barriers; act in a lead capacity and train a group of drafting aides and technicians; assist in preparing specifications for bridges; prepare specifications for buildings; and prepare cost estimates for bridges and buildings.

Minimum Qualifications

Structural Design Technician I

Either I

One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Drafting Services Aid, Range B.

Or II

Sixty semester or equivalent quarter units of college education, 30 units of which must have been in engineering, drafting, or other related areas (45 semester or equivalent quarter units of college education will admit an applicant to the competition, but he/she must produce evidence of completion of the total college requirement before he/she will be considered for appointment).

Or III

Two years of structural drafting experience in an engineering office equivalent in duties and level of responsibility to a Drafting Services Aid, Range B, in the California state service. [College education in engineering or drafting may be substituted for the experience requirement on the basis of one year (30 semester units or equivalent quarter units) of education is equivalent to one year of experience.]

Structural Design Technician II

Either I

Two years of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Structural Design Technician I.

Or II

Five years of structural drafting experience in an engineering office, two years of which shall have been experience equivalent in duties and level of responsibility to a Structural Design Technician I in the California state service. [College education in engineering or drafting may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the experience requirement on the basis of one year (30 semester units or equivalent quarter units) of education is equivalent to one year of experience.]

Structural Design Technician III

Either I

Three years of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Structural Design Technician II.

Or II

Five years of engineering drafting experience, three years of which must have been in independent structural engineering drafting assignments equivalent in duties and level of responsibility to a Structural Design Technician II in the California state service.
