Definition

Under direction, to perform difficult electrical engineering design, specification preparation, estimating, and inspection work involved in the design, construction and maintenance of storm drainage pumping plants, water supply systems, sewage lift stations, vehicular tunnels, movable bridges, roadside rests, highway maintenance stations, toll plazas, truck weigh and inspection stations, and other transportation-related facilities; and to do other related work.

Typical Tasks

Designs and prepares the more difficult electrical engineering plans, specifications and estimates for transportation-related facilities including cathodic and stray current protection, outdoor and indoor lighting, power and control systems for movable bridges, pumps, vehicular tunnel ventilation, standby engine generators, lifts, air compressors, aids to navigation, and building heating, ventilating and air conditioning; checks drawings and makes cost estimates of electrical systems; checks contractors' lists of equipment and construction details; makes construction, maintenance and repair inspections; tests completed work for compliance with contract specifications; as required, may act as leadworker and review the reports of Electrical Engineers; dictates correspondence and prepares reports.

Minimum Qualifications

Either I

 

Two years of experience performing the duties of an Electrical Engineer, Range B, in the area of movable bridges, buildings and drainage pumping plants in the California state service.

Or II

 

Experience: Three years of professional electrical engineering experience, at least two years of which shall have been in design, construction and maintenance work in at least two of the following fields: cathodic and stray current protection; outdoor and indoor lighting; power and control systems (for movable bridge operation, pumps, vehicular tunnel ventilation, standby engine generators, aids to navigation); and building heating, ventilating and air conditioning. (The two years of specialized experience must be comparable in level of responsibility to that of an Electrical Engineer, Range B, in the California state service.) and

 

Education: Equivalent to graduation from college with major work in electrical engineering (additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis).

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Electrical engineering methods, materials and equipment used in the design, construction and maintenance of cathodic and stray current protection systems, storm drainage, pumping plants, water supplies and sewage lift stations, vehicular tunnels, movable bridges, roadside rests, highway maintenance stations, toll plazas, truck weigh and inspection facilities and other transportation-related facilities; various codes, safety orders, and regulations governing the design and installation of electrical work.

 

Ability to: Prepare and check plans, specifications and estimates for transportation-related electrical facilities; direct or make construction and maintenance inspections of electrical installations; lead the work of others; establish and maintain cooperative relations with those contacted in the work; analyze situations and adopt an effective course of action; dictate correspondence and prepare reports.
