Definition

Under general direction, to provide clerical support to professional counseling staff by performing specialized duties related to the rehabilitation process; and to do other related work.

Typical Tasks

Arranges for physical restoration services of average difficulty; arranges for specialist and general medical examinations and/or diagnostic procedures including X-ray and laboratory studies; makes appointments for clients for interviews, medical appointments and testing; prepares authorizations for services to clients including maintenance, transportation, training, equipment purchases, insurance policies, licenses and fees; checks tuition, transportation rates, and other costs and makes arithmetic computations of expenditures and maintains records for clients' services; charges expenditures to proper accounting code, fiscal year, and case service code, and verifies dates of authorized service; transcribes dictated case record material.

Minimum Qualifications

Eighteen months of clerical experience, of which six months shall have been spent in the California state service at a level of responsibility not less than that of an Office Assistant II in a learning capacity in a Department of Rehabilitation field office performing specialized clerical duties, for the professional counseling staff, related to the client services delivery system.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Sections of the Department of Rehabilitation's Accounting Manual, Relative Value Studies, and the Schedule of Maximum Allowances relating to the provision of client services; sections of the Rehabilitation Administrative Manual relating to statistical reporting procedures and regulations governing purchase of client services; use of fee schedules; basic arithmetic; office methods, business English, medical and psychological terminology, and correspondence.

 

Ability to: Establish and maintain effective relationships with clients, staff, and representatives of the public contacted in the course of the work; type 40 words a minute; transcribe from mechanical dictating equipment; apply the required knowledge effectively; evaluate work independently and adopt an effective course of action.
