Definition of Series

This series specification describes classes in the Department of Parks and Recreation that are used to perform a variety of aquatic services at State ocean and inland beaches, underwater parks, and recreation areas on a seasonal basis only.

 

Incumbents perform technical duties involving public contact, beach patrol, and safety activities. The Lifeguard II (Seasonal) acts as a leadperson for the seasonal training level.

Definition of Levels

Lifeguard I (Seasonal)

This is the recruiting and training level for this series. Under supervision, incumbents detect and rescue persons or vessels in distress; take command in emergencies; perform first-aid and resuscitation procedures; notify headquarters of accidents and rescues; prepare reports; remove hazards; assist the public and advise visitors of rules and regulations; operate, inspect and perform maintenance on emergency rescue equipment and vehicles; operate PBX switchboard and radiotelephone; and other related duties.

Lifeguard II (Seasonal)

This is the leadperson level for this series. Under general supervision, incumbents perform duties of Lifeguard I (Seasonal) and in addition, assists in training; planning work schedules and assignments; dispatching and leading a group of seasonal lifeguards engaged in lifesaving activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Both Levels:

Possession of a valid driver license of the appropriate class issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Lifeguard I (Seasonal)

Possession of (1) a Department of Parks and Recreation first-aid certificate or equivalent and (2) a Department of Parks and Recreation Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate or equivalent. An approved Department of Health Emergency Technician certificate may be substituted for both the required certificates. Applicants who do not possess these certificates will be admitted to the examination but they must produce evidence of the certificates before they can be considered for an appointment.

Lifeguard II (Seasonal)

Possession of (1) a Department of Parks and Recreation First Responder certificate or equivalent and (2) a Department of Parks and Recreation Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Red Cross Professional Rescuer or equivalent certificate. An approved Department of Health Emergency Technician certificate may be substituted for both the required certificates. Applicants who do not possess these certificates will be admitted to the examination but they must produce evidence of the certificates before they can be considered for an appointment. and Equivalent to three months of experience performing the duties of a lifeguard in other than swimming pools.

Knowledge and Abilities

Lifeguard I (Seasonal)

Knowledge of: First-aid procedures and resuscitation methods.

 

Ability to: Swim at a level sufficient to perform lifesaving activities; read and write English at a level appropriate to the class; learn and apply standard first-aid procedures and resuscitation methods; follow directions; remain alert; analyze situations accurately; think and act quickly and take command in emergencies; establish and maintain good working relations; communicate effectively.

Lifeguard II (Seasonal)

Knowledge of: All of the above, and surf, ocean, lake, and river swimming, bathing, and boating hazards; first-aid and rescue equipment, and their proper use and maintenance; advanced first-aid practices and resuscitation methods.

 

Ability to: All of the above, and lead and train seasonal staff; and plan work schedules and assignments.

Special Personal Characteristics

Both Levels:

Willingness to work long and irregular hours, weekends, and holidays; tact and diplomacy; dependability; maturity sufficient to assume the responsibility of protecting lives of others; willingness to conform to prescribed uniform standards.

Special Physical Characteristics

Both Levels:

Physical strength, endurance, and agility necessary to perform lifesaving activities; visual acuity and hearing in each ear sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.

Special Requirement

Both Levels:

Successful completion of the Department of Parks and Recreation seasonal lifeguard training program prior to appointment.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

Both Levels:

Education equivalent to completion of the 12th grade and experience as a lifeguard in other than swimming pools.
