Best Practices for the Probationary Period

Overview

Presented by CalHR Legal Division House Counsel: This is a course on the state’s probationary period, and how and why a department can and should reject an employee during probation when appropriate.

Objectives

This course will provide supervisors and managers an overview of the state’s probationary period, and the steps to consider and take when preparing a rejecting on probation. We will explain the statutory basis for and purpose of the probationary period. We will identify some of the warning signs leading up to rejecting an employee. We will discuss the importance and purpose of providing periodic probationary reports. We will identify the team members with whom to communicate when discussing a prospective rejection. We will also discuss service of the rejection notice, and the appeal process.
