Competency Based Performance and Development - The CalSTRS Cross-Functional Approach

Class Description

Learn about the California State Teachers’ Retirement System’s collaborative approach to competency based employee performance and development across traditional Human Resources functions. The session will cover integrating core- and classification-family competencies at every stage of the employee lifecycle, including recruitment, selection, onboarding, performance management and professional development.  The CalSTRS team will share their lessons learned and provide tips on implementing and continually evaluating performance management and development successes for sustainable organizational performance.

Kristel Turko

Kristel Turko is the manager of Selection Services, Classification and Compensation and Labor Relations at CalSTRS.  Prior to her tenure at CalSTRS, she spent 16 years at CalPERS in various staff and management roles.

Katie Valdivia

Katie Valdivia  is the manager over the CalTRSR Training Services team.  She joined CalSTRS in 1998 as an analyst in the Client Outreach and Guidance division. She served as a workshop coordinator, project lead and trainer during her time there.  Since December she has served as the Organizational Development manager, providing guidance for training, employee engagement and knowledge transfer and transition activities.  

Brenna Neuharth

Brenna Neuharth is the Manager of Workforce Planning at CalSTRS.  Ms. Neuharth joined CalSTRS in 2005 in Media Relations and has also held staff positions in the Client Outreach and Guidance and Human Resources Divisions.  Prior to joining state service, Ms. Neuharth worked in both the non-profit and private sectors, primarily in Marketing Project Management and Public Relations.
